10 Bucket List Summer Mountain Bike Destinations

10 Bucket List Summer Mountain Bike Destinations

In last month's Reserve Newsletter, we encouraged road readers to embrace the New Year with a sense of adventure by planning a summer bike trip. January, we suggested, is the perfect time to map out a grand cycling journey, and to spark your enthusiasm, we highlighted the top ten stages of the Tour de France as inspiration. But we haven’t forgotten about our mountain biking community. This month, we shift gears to focus on the dirt side of things, presenting our picks for the top summer mountain biking destinations.

1. Whistler, British Columbia, Canada
Whistler is often considered the pinnacle of mountain biking destinations, which is why we put it at the top of our list of summer riding locales. Not only does the Whistler Mountain Bike Park offer everything from beginner-friendly flow trails to expert-level downhill runs, but beyond the park, Whistler’s backcountry trails wind through lush forests, alpine meadows, and scenic mountain passes. There are endless opportunities for adventure, and not only is it easy to get to from most parts of the world, but the bike-friendly village—complete with gear shops, hotels, restaurants, and a lively riding community—makes Whistler an all-in-one destination for mountain bikers.

2. Moab, Utah, USA
Moab’s iconic slickrock terrain and desert landscapes are a playground for mountain bikers. Trails like the Slickrock Bike Trail offer unique sandstone riding experiences, while The Whole Enchilada provides an epic 25-mile descent through diverse terrain, including alpine forests, canyons, and desert (expert tip: book your shuttle well in advance, as Moab gets very busy during peak months). Moab is perfect for those who love technical riding and breathtaking views, with trails that challenge one's skill and stamina. Plus, after a day of riding or on a rest day, you can visit nearby Arches and Canyonlands National Parks to take in even more stunning natural beauty.

3. Finale Ligure, Italy
Nestled on the Italian Riviera, Finale Ligure combines stunning Mediterranean views with an extensive trail network that caters to enduro and downhill riders. The trails range from fast and flowy coastal tracks to steep, rocky alpine descents. While you can ride up to the trailheads on paved roads, most riders take advantage of the extensive van shuttle system that runs from the village of Finale into the local mountains. One of the best parts of riding in Finale is indulging in the local Italian cuisine, which perfectly complements a day on the trails. Additionally, the beautiful beaches along the coast provide the ideal setting for post-ride relaxation. If the crowds in Finale are too much, nearby Molini offers another fantastic riding experience, though it’s a bit further afield.

4. Rotorua, New Zealand
We admit it—Rotorua is a long, long way for most of us to travel for a mountain biking trip. That said, the upside is that it’s summer there when most of us are hunkered down for winter, and what a mountain biking haven it is. Featuring the Whakarewarewa Forest (commonly known as the Redwoods), Rotorua boasts a trail network with over 100 miles of expertly maintained singletracks. The trails weave through lush, otherworldly forests and offer options for all skill levels, from smooth flow trails to technical downhill runs. Rotorua’s geothermal features, such as bubbling mud pools and steaming vents, add a unique element to the experience, making it a must-visit destination for riders seeking natural beauty and diverse terrain.

5. Chamonix, France
Chamonix, located in the shadow of Mont Blanc, is a paradise for mountain bikers seeking breathtaking alpine scenery. But we should warn you—riding here is no walk in the park. The high-altitude terrain makes things challenging, with steep climbs, technical descents, and ever-changing conditions. However, the rewards are well worth the effort: stunning panoramic views of glaciers, mountain peaks, and lush valleys await. Chamonix is perfect for adventurous riders who crave long, technical rides paired with the charm of a classic European mountain town. After a day of tackling the trails, you’ll find plenty of post-ride amenities to unwind and recharge.

6. Sedona, Arizona, USA
Sedona has been a hotspot for mountain biking for decades, earning its place as one of the original must-ride destinations. The vibrant red rock landscape, with trails winding through it, offers a truly unique riding experience. The variety here is impressive—trails like Cathedral Rock and Hiline combine technical riding with jaw-dropping views of towering rock formations and sweeping desert vistas. Sedona is also known for its spiritual energy, and many riders find the natural beauty, combined with the welcoming riding community, deeply inspiring.

7. Queenstown, New Zealand
Queenstown is often called the ultimate mountain biking destination, and for good reason. The mountain biking scene here lives up to the hype, offering something for everyone. The Queenstown Bike Park features lift-accessed downhill trails, while nearby trails like Coronet Peak provide epic backcountry riding with stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains. Queenstown also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with world-class restaurants and accommodations to suit a range of budgets. Off the bike, the area offers countless other outdoor activities, making Queenstown a perfect destination for a well-rounded adventure.

8. Squamish, British Columbia, Canada
If you’re heading to Whistler on our recommendation, we strongly suggest carving out a few extra days to explore the incredible trails in Squamish. Just a short drive from Vancouver on the way to Whistler, Squamish is renowned for its steep and technical terrain. Trails like Half Nelson, a perfectly sculpted flow trail, and Credit Line, a technical masterpiece, highlight the area's exceptional trail-building expertise. But Squamish isn’t just about the riding—its trails are nestled within the stunning coastal rainforest, offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains and Howe Sound. Beyond the trails, Squamish has a laid-back charm with a thriving outdoor culture and a welcoming vibe. It’s the perfect complement to your Whistler adventure and a destination that deserves a spot on any mountain biker’s bucket list.

9. Park City, Utah, USA
For those unfamiliar with Utah’s trails, Park City is a hidden gem. As the first Gold-Level Ride Center designated by IMBA, Park City boasts an impressive 450 miles of interconnected trails. From smooth, beginner-friendly tracks to technical singletrack and challenging downhill runs, there’s something for every rider. Park City is also incredibly accessible; it’s just a 35-mile scenic drive from Salt Lake City along Interstate 80, with shuttle services available for convenience.

10. Santa Cruz, California, USA
Santa Cruz is a dream destination for mountain biking and continues to impress, even for those who ride its trails daily (like us). Wilder Ranch State Park and the Campus trail network are minutes away from town, while Soquel Demonstration Forest (Demo) offers a variety of trails, from smooth flow options for beginners to steep, technical singletracks. Trails like Flow Trail and Braille Trail stand out for their length and expertly designed features. What sets Santa Cruz apart is its year-round mild climate and vibrant biking culture, with plenty of bike shops, craft breweries, and scenic beaches for post-ride relaxation. If you make it to Santa Cruz, be sure to stop by our showroom and say hello!
